(05/17/2007)
Pittsburgh, PA
PennDOT District 11, in cooperation with the Urban Redevelopment Authority
(URA), is advising motorists that the Hot Metal Street Bridge and Second Avenue
in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will be closed to vehicles and
pedestrians on Saturday morning, May 19, 2007.
The closures will only occur from 4 to 10 a.m. on Saturday for public safety as
contractor crews erect structural steel beams across Second Avenue for the Hot
Metal Street Pedestrian Bridge project. Second Avenue will be closed between
Greenfield Avenue and Bates Street. The Hot Metal Street Bridge will be closed
to traffic between South Water Street and Second Avenue. Local residents are
encouraged to find alternate routes. Signs will be posted to guide motorists around
the closures. The suggested detours are indicated below:
Hot Metal Street Bridge
– Use the Birmingham Bridge or Tenth Street Bridge
Second Avenue
– Use the Boulevard of the Allies or the Parkway East (I-376)
The pedestrian bridge is included in the Hot Metal Bridge rehabilitation project
that started last year. The overall project includes a pedestrian/bicycle path, steel
bridge construction, steel bridge rehabilitation, new concrete deck, bearing
replacement, repair of floor and truss members, painting, ramps, drainage,
landscaping, pavement markings, lighting, signals, and other improvements. The
project is being conducted by the URA and the City of Pittsburgh. PennDOT is
overseeing the construction because federal funding is involved and is releasing
this information as a public service. Media inquiries should contact Tom Carey,
project manager with the URA, at 412-205-1314 for more information. The prime
contractor for the $9.2 million Hot Metal Street Bridge project is the Brayman
Construction Company of Saxonburg PA. The overall project will be completed
in late fall 2007.
